Initial Thoughts:
I LOVE a good protein bar. Whether they are a quick snack for between classes, breakfast on the go, or fuel for a hike around Boomer, I live on protein bars. My issue with them is that they always make me feel uncomfortably full and are filled with ingredients I would rather not put in my body. When I received a box of Odyssey Protein Bars in the mail, I was excited to try them but a little hesitant. Upon further review, I am sorry I hadn't tried them sooner! They have a consistency similar to a Quest Bar but are made with all-natural ingredients similar to a Lara Bar. While they are not sugar-free, they are naturally sweetened with dates with no sugar-alcohols, so, unlike Lara Bars, remain relatively low in sugar. And they have spinach!
You'll notice in the title there are two parts to these bars: protein and prebiotic.
Prebiotics are food for probiotics, the good bacteria you need for digestive health. Especially in this season of sickness with everyone taking antibiotics, it is important to ensure you keep your body balanced and gut happy. Odyssey achieves this with chicory root fiber. The chicory fiber is great for helping with digestion and anti-bloating, meaning you won't feel uncomfortably full after scarfing down one of these delicious bars.
Did I mention they are gluten-free??? Oh yeah. They are.
I cannot recommend Odyssey enough! Keep reading for a breakdown on each bar.
Vanilla Blueberry: 10/10
My all-time favorite. I love the cookie dough consistency of this one and the subtle sweetness that makes you feel like you just took a big bite of a blueberry muffin. The only difference is this blueberry muffin only has 9 grams of sugar, 13 grams of protein, and shhh- spinach and kale! This tasty treat is once again gluten-free and packed with plant-based protein. It is however not dairy free, so if that is something you need to watch out for, make a note. Overall, if have a craving for something sweet and fruity, I definitely recommend this flavor.
Mocha Chocolate Crisp: 6/10
While this flavor was still delicious, I am not a huge coffee-flavored person. The texture of this bar was definitely crispier, and it was a bit more bitter than the others. that being said, it was very reminiscent of a cup of warm coffee and would be the perfect addition to someone's morning routine. This bar is made with 13 grams of whey protein. This bar is also gluten-free and made with all-natural ingredients. There are 2 grams of added sugar from the chocolate, but for the most part dates and stevia play a big part in sweetening this bar. A final word on the Mocha Chocolate Crisp: very yummy and recommended if you are a big coffee drinker.
Banana Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter: 8/10
Looking for a delicious snack packed with 16 grams of whey protein and all your favorite flavors including banana, chocolate, and peanut butter? Look no further than this bar right here. It tastes like freshly baked banana bread but with four times the fiber. Talk about bananas! I loved the medley of flavors in this one and appreciate how it still is pretty low in sugar. If you are looking for a sweet treat, this is the bar to try.
Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip: 8.5/10
The perfect high-protein Reeses alternative, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip was one of my favorite flavors. Like the blueberry, this bar is made with 13 grams of plant-based protein and no sugar alcohol. That being said, this is one of the higher added-sugar bars, with 7 grams of added sugar, for a total of 10 grams of sugar. This is still a great alternative to less-filling, lower-protein candy bars. If you find yourself craving some of that leftover Halloween candy (go ahead and eat it!), but then once it runs out and you still want more, reach for one of these bars!
Mint Chocolate Brownie: 7/10
Tastes exactly like what it sounds like. Imagine a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie, and you pretty much have one of these. Except imagine the girl scout is really buff because she gets a whopping 16 grams of protein with each cookie she eats. I really like the refreshing minty taste of this bar. It was more on the bitter/crunchy side with the Mocha Chocolate Crisp, but still delicious. I definitely recommend this flavor for someone who wants to add a little healthy treat to their everyday routine.
Dark Chocolate Almond: 10/10
Last but certainly not least, we have Dark Chocolate Almond. THIS BAR. Chef's Kiss. A softer consistency and sweetness while maintaining a low amount of sugar, is the absolute perfect quick snack. It has 13 grams of pea protein and is... get this... VEGAN! That's right! All you vegan girlies out there get to enjoy these tasty bars! I really enjoyed this flavor if you can't tell and recommend it to everyone!
Final Thoughts:
I have nothing negative to say about Odyssey Prebiotic Protein Bars. I enjoyed some flavors more than others, but that was a complete personal preference. If you are curious to try them and want to know where you can order the, go to their website at https://odysseysnacks.com/ or Amazon!
Thank you for reading and have a great day!
